IMPORTANT NOTICES

All town athletic fields and the outdoor track remain OPEN at this time for INDIVIDUAL and FAMILY use only. All social events, youth organizations, or group activities will remain postponed until June 8th. We continue to encourage community members to utilize these facilities in a safe and positive manner. All community members are to remain diligent in social distancing of 6 feet between users at all times when utilizing the athletic facilities. No group gatherings of any kind will be permitted. Town officials reserve the right to close any athletic/recreational facilities or ask users to leave a facility if proper safety precaution guidelines are not being followed.

Out of an abundance of caution to the spread of COVID-19 in the Town of Stoneham, all Town and School Playgrounds and Play Structures will be closed to the public effective today, March 19, 2020 and will remain closed until further notice. 

The Stoneham Recreation Department has postponed all town-sponsored recreational programming until Monday, June 8, 2020. All permitted uses of the town-owned athletic fields, playgrounds and recreation facilities will also be suspended until Monday, June 8, 2020. Recreation Department services will be available at Town Hall on an “appointment only” basis and any recreation or athletic field related inquiries are encouraged to submitted via email to sangelo@stoneham-ma.gov beginning on March 17, 2020. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in advance.

Effective immediately, Recreation Director Steve Angelo will be serving as the Director of Volunteer Fulfillment for the Town of Stoneham until further notice. Any individual or group who wish to volunteer or contribute toward assisting our at-risk and most vulnerable community members are encouraged to reach out to the Recreation Office at 781-279-2609 or sangelo@stoneham-ma.gov. A brief questionnaire will be distributed to all interested volunteers to help to coordinate schedules and services.

TENTATIVE TOWN-MANAGED RECREATIONAL FACILITY REOPENING INFORMATION

ATHLETIC FIELDS

PHASE 1 – Remain Open under same restrictions
Athletic fields can be utilized only for non-contact sports, with no shared equipment, such as tennis and pickleball. No permits should be issued for group gatherings and users should not engage in pick-up games, organized games or tournaments.

 

Users waiting to utilize a section or area of the field should wait outside the field of play until previous users have vacated the facility to ensure proper social distancing and prevent accidental contact of other users’ equipment.

Users should not engage in pick-up games, organized games, or tournaments.

 

No group activities, no gathering of over 10 people.

 

Social Distancing is required of all groups and patrons utilizing facilities. Personal Protective Equipment is strongly encouraged if social distancing cannot be ensured.

 

PHASE 2 – Limited Permitted usage, restricted group activities (NO SET DATE- Under the discretion of the Town of Stoneham and Stoneham Public Schools)

Permits are issued for groups and youth organizations with restrictions on field use, patron attendance and uses of the field under the revised permit. A written statement of intended field use will be required with all permit requests. No groups over 25 patrons at any time. Organizations will be asked to present an action plan to describe the steps taken to adhere to state mandated restrictions.

 

All patrons must adhere to rules and regulations that are posted at each facility.

 

OUTDOOR TRACK
PHASE 1- Remain Open under same restrictions
Social Distancing is required of all groups and patrons utilizing facilities. Personal Protective Equipment is strongly encouraged if social distancing cannot be ensured.

 

Users waiting to utilize a section or area of the field should wait outside the field of play until previous users have vacated the facility to ensure proper social distancing and prevent accidental contact of other users’ equipment.

 

No group activities, no gatherings of over 10 people.

 

PHASE 2- Open for expanded use.
Organized activities may be allowed for groups under 25 patrons. Group use must be permitted through the Stoneham High School athletic department.

 

All patrons must adhere to rules and regulations that are posted at each facility.

 

TENNIS COURTS
PHASE 1 – Open for recreation use, no games or group activity

Users waiting to utilize a court should wait outside the court’s gates/fence until previous users have vacated the facility to ensure proper social distancing and prevent accidental contact of other users’ equipment.

Users should sanitize hands before and after play, not share equipment, and clean and wipe down equipment.

 

When engaged in play, users should avoid touching other users’ equipment in separate areas.

 

Social Distancing is required of all patrons utilizing tennis. Personal Protective Equipment is strongly encouraged of social distancing cannot be ensured.

 

 

PHASE 2 – No changes; No group activities allowed. Proper Social Distancing required

 

BASKETBALL COURTS

PHASE 1 – Remain Closed for all recreational activity.

Contact activities, such as basketball, are scheduled for restricted orepening during Phase 2

PHASE 2 –  Restricted Opening – June 8, 2020 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Facilities are open small group activities and community use. Total usage of basketball areas cannot exceed 25 patrons.

 

Permitting restrictions and guidance for organizations will be determined by individual cases with the Recreation Department or appropriate governing body. 

 

Users should not engage in pick-up games, organized games, or tournaments.

 

All patrons must adhere to rules and regulations that are posted at each facility.

 

 

TOWN COMMON
PHASE 1 – Open for Non-Group Activities. Passive Recreation

 

No organized or group activities allowed. No Permits will be issued.

 

Social Distancing is required of all groups and patrons utilizing facilities. Personal Protective Equipment is strongly encouraged if social distancing cannot be ensured.

 

Any previously approved events scheduled before 6/8/2020 are postponed.


PHASE 2 – Restricted Opening – June 8, 2020 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

 

Permitted group activities will be allowed under the guidance of the Town Administrator’s office.

 

No groups of over 25 patrons will be allowed for any event or activity.

 

PLAYGROUNDS
PHASE 1 – Closed for all recreational activitys

 

Any use of recreational equipment or structures is not allowed

PHASE 2/PHASE 3 – Restricted Opening (NO OPENING DATE HAS BEEN SET)

 

Playgrounds will be open for recreational use from the community under the MA Safety Standards. Opening dates will determined on proper safety precautions and infrastructures being put in place by the

 

No organized events or group activities will be allowed on playground structures.

TRI-COMMUNITY GREENWAY (Stoneham Section)

PHASE 1 – Open for passive recreation; individual and family use only

 

No group activities, no congregations of over 10 people.

 

Social Distancing is required of all groups and patrons utilizing facilities. Personal Protective Equipment is strongly encouraged if social distancing cannot be ensured.

 

PHASE 2 –Restricted Opening - June 8, 2020 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

 

Open for use by all community members. Group use of 25 patrons or more is not permitted at any time. Any group activitiy under must be permitted through the Town of Stoneham.

 

MIDDLESEX FELLS (Stoneham Section)
Phase 1 – Restricted Opening

 

The Middlesex Fells and Sheepfold Park fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Conservation and Recreation. All restrictions and guidance will be at the discretion on DCR.

STONEHAM ARENA
Phase 1 – Closed

The Stoneham Arena will be working independently on an appropriate and safe opening date. As of not, the Arena will be opening No earlier than August 1 and this date is subject to change.
